BIO 265 6.2.1 - Pressure Differences in the Thoracic Cavity Thoracic Pressures: What is happening to the pressures in the pleural space and alveoli compared to the atmospheric pressure that allows us to breathe in and out? o The expansion of the lungs creates a greater volume, which creates a negative pressure. This draws the air in from the positive pressure atmosphere. The contraction of the lungs does the opposite.
