Martinez 1 Lucelis Martinez The Infallible Ms.Le AP Literature period 2 April 12th, 2019 Book Check #1: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Entry #1: “I knew his mother intimately… She was an extraordinarily beautiful girl, Margaret Devereux, and made all the men frantic by running away with a penniless young fellow-- a mere nobody, sir, a subaltern in a foot regiment, or something of that kind,” (Wilde page 23). Words:321 The overall message of the story is actually quite evident from the start, if one knows about Oscar Wilde’s form of writing, which dealt with the aesthetic movement. Wilde was a believer of appreciating art simply because of its beauty. So, it makes perfect chronological sense that according to the writer and the time period the book was derived from, the overall message of the work as a whole should deal with beauty. More specifically, the message is that, people look for perfection in every aspect of their waking world. Because, the aesthetic movement dealt with beauty on it’s own,Wilde’s purpose here is to simply comment on this reality of life. Regarding this example however, there are several figurative clues to notice. Firstly, Dorian Gray is our muse. He is the subject of which the painting has been made in his likeness, and Margaret Devereux was his mother. As the story progresses, he also falls in love much in the way she had. He is absolutely beautiful but falls in love with a mere nobody. A mere nobody in the eyes of society who is also beautiful. Her family sees her as the perfect one and they thusly see Dorian as the imperfect one so the opposing views are a very obvious dichotomy. Within that dichotomy though, only time will tell which side is evil and which side is good. Also, there is a sense of foreshadowing here because if he’s already begun to repeat the steps of his mother, then maybe his story will end just the same; with death and ruination. People were infatuated with his mother because she was almost perfect in the way she looked while she looked for someone that perfectly suited her life. People are infatuated with Dorian Gray because he is almost perfect in the way he looked while he looked for someone just as visually appealing who could perfectly suit his life. Entry #2: “It was Romeo and Juliet. I must admit that I was rather annoyed at the idea of seeing Shakespeare done in such a wretched hole of a place,” (Wilde page 33). Words: 418 Within this line there are several modes of irony when compared to the rest of the story. For example, situational irony is employed here. Earlier in the novel, two of the three main characters remarked on how Great Britain has lost it’s care for literature and they remarked on
