Lucelis Martinez The Infallible Ms.Le AP Literature per 2 September 12th, 2018 Novel Background on Slaughterhouse-Five Slaughterhouse-Five was originally published in 1969 by Kurt Vonnegut Link: Background on Kurt Vonnegut: Kurt Vonnegut had a life filled with danger, depression and success. He wrote many book and at least three were best sellers, among those: Breakfast of Champions and Slaughterhouse-Five. He is well known for the way he incorporates satire and science fiction into his pieces. After studying in Cornell for two years, he was sent to Europe by the army where he would be captured as a prisoner of war. He was a witness to the many uniquely devastating effects of war and these took significant hold on his mind in later years (especially around the 80s). Nonetheless he was and is revered for his work of literary merit which in some ways reflects his own life. Minority groups like African Americans and Women got tired of being treated like second class citizens and started demanding more rights. Rebelling, in a sense, from the system. Also, men that were supposed to go to war for the country were rebelling as well, refusing to die for causes like the Vietnam war they deemed unnecessary. These young men and women that were demanding their rights would flood the schools and the education of the United States would elevate. Also, the ever present competition between the Soviets and the US would propell innovations in space forward. The calculator would be invented, along with other technological advances as well. Rock would begin to become more popular through Elvis, also a “rebel” and pawns were being moved all across the board. The people demanded change and the government would have to learn to move with it. Link: eartbreak 2.Political Background: The 60s fostered a lot of political change. Firstly the television would allow people to (for the first time) see all the atrocities of war and also the presidential candidates that fought for both sides of the war argument. History tells us that John F Kennedy would become president because people preferred the idea of peace over war. More people than ever would start to vote and new laws would help minorities be able to vote in the first place. The main political agenda was anti- war. Link: 3.Historical: Throughout time, one can dispute, the United States has held certain people back. Women and African Americans, for instance. Progress was made as time moved
