Study Guide for Exam 1 - Answers Spring 2008 Prologue: The Story of Psychology What is psychology? Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Major Philosophical Issues: Free will      is the belief that behavior is caused by an individual’s independent  decision-making. Determinism      is the assumption that everything that happens has a cause of  determinant in the observable world. Mind-Brain Problem: Monism      is the view that conscious experience is generated by and therefore is  inseparable from the brain. Dualism      is the belief that the mind is separate from the brain, but somehow controls  the brain and through it also the rest of the body. Phineas Gage  was a 25 year old railroad foreman. In September 1848, an  accidental explosion drove a tamping iron through the left cheek and through the top  of his head. The consequences of the damage to the frontal lobe was a dramatic  change to his personality and social acceptance.
