1 Madison McReynolds Ms. Krumich English III Honors 19 January 2018 How A Silent Girl Found Her Voice That Was Inspiring To All: An Essay Exploring How Maya Angelou’s Past Inspired Her Writing And Then The Whole World The greatest writers did not start out great, however through life experiences and hard work they became what they are remembered for now. some of these writers used their past, whether good or bad, to inspire not only themselves but others in their writing. Maya Angelou’s legacy is positive, mostly due to the way her writings turn her painful past into an inspiring life. Her work as a writer was influenced by her past, allowing her to give light and hope to those who read it. Maya Angelou's past isn't always talked about because it was really traumatizing for her. When she was young her mother's boyfriend first cuddled her then raped her. after this happened her uncle's found out and murdered the boyfriend. Angelou only 7 years old at the time, felt it was her fault that he was dead. She thought her words had killed that man, so she stopped talking. She “remained mute for five years, but she developed a love for language. She read and memorized books, including the works of black authors and poets Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Paul Lawrence Dunbar. Even though she and Bailey [her brother] were discouraged from reading the works of white writers at home, Angelou read and fell in love with the works of William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Edgar Allan Poe” (“Maya Angelou”).
