Unformatted text preview: Chapter 7 Advanced Correlational Strategies Advanced Correlational Strategies 1) Predicting Behavior: Regression Strategies 1) Assessing Directionality: Cross-Lagged and Structural Equations Analysis 1) Uncovering Underlying Dimensions: Factor Analysis Regression Strategies Once we know that certain variables are correlated with a phenomenon, regression allows us to develop equations that describe precisely how they are related This allows us to predict one variable from the others Linear Regression Regression analysis : analysis to develop a regression equation that we can use to predict one score on the basis of others The Regression Line This line portrays the nature of the relationship between the two variables Example: regression equations used to predict college performance from SAT scores Linear Regression (contd) The regression line is represented as an equation: y = + 1 x y = the variable that we want to predict = the regression constant, the y-intercept of the line 1 = the regression coefficient, the slope of the line x = the participants x score Linear Regression Example: suppose a participant obtained a depression score of 50 (x=50), what would their anxiety score be (y=?)?...
