Sleep The sleep cycle is based on circadian rhythms Internal patterns of bodily functions over a ~24-hour period Can occur even w/out normal cues like daylight and alarm clocks

Light also influences sleep/wakefulness; it gives signals to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (in the hypothalamus) Disruptions to the circadian rhythm… can lead to thinking less clearly, inattentiveness, and feeling sleepy due to shifting work schedules, jet lag, pulling an “all nighter”
