In Amy Tan's article "Mother Tongue" she describes the various forms of the English language that she uses depending on who she is surrounded by. She explains throughout the article to whom and what has influenced her to develop these different styles. Furthermore, Tan goes on to explain how these various styles have influenced her in why she speaks differently with certain people, how she writes, and how it has affected her in her career and relationships; specifically, with her mother. Tan touches on how her mother, and other non-English-speaking Americans, can be disregarded based on how they speak the language. The articles main claim in “Mother Tongue” is that having a language barrier does not define one’s intelligence but rather limits us in situations because of Tan’s referencing of both her and her mother’s encounters, Tan’s various uses of English amongst different people,and how she significantly excels throughout her writing career.Throughout the article, Tan gives examples of how bilingual people, specifically her mother, are overlooked or discriminated against in their everyday lives because they cannot speak fluent English. Tan introduces her mother and talks about how her mother couldnot speak English very well, and the way she spoke was considered "limited" or "broken." (p.21) Tan gives one example of discrimination that she witnessed against her mother by saying, “people in the department stores, at banks, and in restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her” (Tan, 2006, p.22). Tan's mother would have these experiences because her lack of fluent English put a barrier between her and other people who did not understand her.
