Psychology Class – 1-25-07 24/01/2007 18:44:00 Why study into Psychology? “Everything psychological is simultaneously biological” Neural Communication Neuron o A nerve cell o The basic building block of the nervous system What Neurons consist of: o Dendrites Busy, branching extensions of a neuron that receive messages  and conduct impulses toward the cell body. o Axon The extension of a neuron, ending in branching terminal fibers,  through which messages are sent to other neurons or to  muscles or glands Some are several feet long (motor) o Myelin Sheath A layer of fatty cells which encase the fibers of many neurons Enables greater transmission speed of neutral impulses Action Potential o A neural impulse; a brief electrical charge that travels down an axon o Generated y the movement of positively charged atoms in and out of
