NURS 6521: Advanced Pharmacology INITIAL POST Over the past three decades, HIV infections has reached epidemic proportions. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 35 million people worldwide are infected with HIV, with more than two thirds of cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa (WHO, 2015). HIV is transmitted through four types of contact: sexual intercourse, blood-Bourne contact, perinatal transmission, and breast feeding, with sexual intercourse with an infected individual being the most common (Arcangelo, et al., 2017). Because currently available antiretroviral regimens cannot achieve eradication of HIV, goals of therapy primarily focus on sustained suppression of viral replication to undetectable levels (Arcangelo, et al., 2017). I would agree that there is a correlation between drug advancements, societal complacency, and infection rates.
