Student 1StudentProfessor TendrupAstron 1141Essay topic 223 April 2015Evolution Of BacteriaBacteria and other organisms have developed measures through which they can survive in their constantly changing environments. Continuous use of antibiotics by humans to treat themselves and animals has led to the evolution of bacteria in an attempt to adapt and survive in these hostile environments. This evolution leads to these bacteria developing resistance and tolerance to the therapeutic antibiotics used by humans to treat certain bacterialinfections. This essay evaluates the development and evolution of bacteria over time.Over time since the time bacteria was discovered in the 19thcentury, they have evolved to develop tolerance and resistance to most of the compounds that humans have manufactured to treat diseases caused by them. Humans were not able to develop any compounds to combat most diseases caused bacteria in the early years after discovery until they were able to develop antibiotics half a decade ago. “Antibiotic discovery, modes of action, and mechanisms of resistance have been productive research topics in academia and, until recently, in the pharmaceutical industry” (Davies and Davies, 419). This shows that antibiotics were a major breakthrough for humans in the fight against the bacteria but they were also faced by challenges posed by these organisms becoming tolerant and resistant to them. Many bacteria that affect humans have evolved over time to become resistant to
