1.Introduction.a.My name is Hoa Julie Pham. I am from Oxford, MS. The community event that I attended this year is Pride Weekend. 2.Describe the cultural event in which you participateda.This week is Pride Weekend in Oxford, meaning Oxford is celebrating the LGBTQ community. The celebration starts on the Friday, May 3, 2019 and ends on Sunday, May 5, 2019. Pride weekend started four years ago by a student fromthe Sarah Islom Center at the University of Mississippi. This student spent six weeks planning a Pride Parade in the Oxford community. As Pride weekend started small with just a pride parade. Pride weekend has grown and expanded over the years. Every year, Pride Weekend has a theme. This year’s theme is “Can’t Stop the Beat”. At last year’s Pride Weekend, partnerships brought Big Freedia and drag performers from Pulse Nightclub in Orlando to Oxford. b.This year’s Pride weekend started off with Lavender Graduation which is a ceremonial celebration that celebrates achievements and contributions of LGBTQ students. During the ceremony, graduating seniors and graduate students with be given a lavender cord for graduation and a reception. c.The next event is the Pride Parade, which was held on Saturday, May 4th. The marchers include organizations, such as, OUTGrads, Blue Suede Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Oxford, Lafayette Dems, Lambda, Lambda Car Club, Oxford Film Festival, Dykes on Bikes, The University of Mississippi Psychological Services Center, Human Rights Campaign, and First Regional Library staff. d.The next event was the Drag show that was held at the Lyric in Oxford on Saturday night. e.The last event of the weekend held on Sunday is the softball game and family picnic that is held at Avent Park. Where the community gathers together and have a softball game, cookout, and activities for the children.
