Period:1 Life Orientation Teacher: Ms Van Rooyen Number of learners: 32This is the only subject that all the grade 11 learners have together. The excitement caused by this is obvious. The learners enter and choose any seat as there are so specific allocations. Friends tend to choose seats close together. The period is an hour long which is longer than the other subjects, however learners only have LO once a week. The practical physical education components are completed as extra activities in allocated periods. The lesson I observed was purely theoretical. The classroom is filled with posters of historical figures which creates an interesting atmosphere. There are also charts and fun items placed around the room to make it appear more casual. However, the learners were quite tightly packed and as it was a hot day it veered on uncomfortable for them even with the fan on. There is no air conditioning. Despite there being very little space and the learners being close enough to chatter, the teacher kept excellent control of the lesson. The classroom features a projector, screen, blackboard and whiteboard side by side, 34 chairs and desks along with a large teacher’s desk. The teacher has enough markers for herself and for some of the learners to write ideas on the board. Each learner has a textbook. The teacher spent 10 minutes reading through the chapter and the notes on the topic before opening to the class and allowing them to engage in discussion about the content. They were covering different types of relationships. The learners appear to enjoy the opportunity for discussing this personal topic. The teacher makes it clear that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and states her own thoughts plainly. There is conflict at times when learners have different opinions which differ widely. They are passionate when making their opinions. The teacher makes it clear that it is imperative to respect each other always and especially when they disagree. Having a bigger and less cluttered classroom space would really be of benefit. Additionally, it would assist discussions to explain to learners that even though we are all entitled to our opinions, it must be based on facts and cannot/should not discriminate against anyone else. Period 2 Life Science Teacher: Mrs Wicht Number of Learners: 9 Time: 35 Minutes The classroom is decorated with pictures of animals. The classroom has a full-scale skeleton. Taxidermized insects and snakeskins are also on display. There are samples of moss, sponges and algae. Modals of cells and plants are also visible. This creates an environment that is very reminiscent of the outdoors so it fits the subject of life science perfectly. The students can use the modals to learn the intricacies of human anatomy and there are charts which accompany them for information. The
