Wick Juliann Wick Professor Napoirkowski English 1302.12 11 September 2018 The Myth of the Latin Women: Why it is wrong The Myth of the Latin Women: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria was written by Judith Ortiz Cofer. Cofer wrote about the stereotypes that are connected to being a Hispanic woman and her experiences with them. The media in America and Europe has objectified the Hispanic woman, they are portrayed as erotic sexual items. Based off of the prejudice against the Hispanic woman they are being prejudged as unskilled workers and sex objects. Latino women are thought of as domestic, as they know little English and have few skills. They are thought to not have very substantial jobs if they do work, such as a maid, a waitress, or a factory worker. One of Cofer’s examples of this was when one of her friends, a Chicana woman, was working on her PH.D. in philosophy and her professor was surprised at the “big words” that she used.
