SC121 Unit 4 Assignment PART 1 1. Why are cells are important to the body Cells are important to the body because they are “the basic living, structural and functional units of the body,” (Wiley, 2017). The cell has 3 main parts which are known as the:plasma membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. 2. Which organelle do you think would kill you the fastest if you lost it? Explain your answer. The cell organelle that would kill you the fastest if you lost it would be the Mitochondria. Since the Mitochondria is the power plant of the cell, it is where most of the energy is generated from, then this would lead me to believe that without it a lot of the other functions of the cell would not be able to function as well. 3. How is cell shape related to function? Give at least 3 examples and explain. Cell shape is related to function in that it affects the cells job to function as it should if it is not in its correct shape. Examples of these are as follows: (1) The nerve cell has long thin, extensions that help the neurons pass chemical and electrical messages more quickly. (2) The red blood cells are shaped like flat tire that contains a divot in the center. This allows them to move more easily through the capillaries since the blood is now “squishy”. (3) Cells in the intestinal lining have cilia covered over them. This increases the surface are so that more nutrients is absorbed from the food which is going through the body.
