NEP 1340: INTRODUCTION TO EXERCISE AND FITNESS SUMMER SYLLABUS University of Missouri Course Description Course Title: Introduction to Exercise and Fitness Course Number/Unit Hours: NEP 1340/3 credit hours Course Discipline: College of Human and Environmental Sciences (HES), Nutrition and Exercise Physiology Department Course Description: This course provides a collection of information in the fields of exercise and physical fitness. It is a required course for students majoring in Nutrition and Fitness but is open to non-majors as well. The goal of the course is to provide students with practical information about exercise and physical fitness. Location: Online Office hours: Available by appointment. Instructor contact information below. Course Goals After successfully completing NEP 1340, students will know: 1. Definition and general understanding of the fields of exercise and physical fitness. 2. Definitions and understanding of the health-related components of fitness (cardiovascular fitness, muscular fitness, flexibility, body composition). 3. How to assess the components of health-related fitness. 4. How to develop safe and effective fitness routines. 5. How to exercise safely. 6. Definition, causes and therapies for treating obesity and associated diseases. 7. Definition and recognition of safe/risky exercises. 8. How to analyze motion and speak the language of movement. 9. Definition and recognition of unsound exercise and fitness products and programs. 10.Identify reliable sources of exercise and fitness information and characteristics of sound scientific research.
