Ch.1 Science and Measurement 1.2 Matter and Mass We can describe matter in terms of physical properties - those characteristics that can be determined without changing the chemical composition (what it is made of) of matter Physical change- moving between physical states (ice to liquid); the chemical composition of matter is not changed Heat also plays a part in the particles in determining whether it is a solid, liquid, or gas Higher heat = more kinetic energy = molecules separate 1.3 Units Mass- a measurement of the amount of matter in a sample Volume- the amount of space occupied by an object 1.4 Scientific Notation Scientific notation is also called exponential notation Benefit of using scientific notation: it allows you to compare very large or small numbers without having to count zeros For large numbers, such as blood cell numbers, width of human hair, etc. 1.5 Measurements and Significant Figures Accuracy- related to how close a measured value is to a true value

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
