Cultural Self-Awareness and Family Heritage Foodways Assignment Taylor Ramdeen 1 Foodways and Health Beliefs As a pesecetarian, one who consumes seafood but no other meat, I include a lot of fruits and vegetables as well as lean proteins and some dairy in my diet. When making a meal, I believe it is necessary to have some sort of vegetable, a source of protein, and spices to make the food flavorful. One food that I would never eat is liver from any type of animal. Liver is not very appealing to me and I don’t think it would taste very good. Also, since I am a vegetarian and liver is considered meat, I would not consume it. One food that I would consider high status is white truffles (fungus). These types of truffles are expensive and rare to find. A food that I would consider low status is rice. Rice is very cheap and filling and is eaten around the world for those reasons. Right now, I currently either eat by myself or with my boyfriend. I do not follow a specific religion so I don’t include or exclude anything from my diet for religious reasons. During Thanksgiving, one food that is always eaten in my family is oyster stuffing. My grandma makes this stuffing every year. My favorite home cooked meal would have to be pasta with shrimp. I prepare a home cooked dinner pretty often, usually 4-5 times a week. I like making dinners at home because it is usually healthier and cheaper than eating out. I also like being able to know what goes into the meal and being able to try different recipes. As a child, I would probably have eaten 2-3 meals away from home each week. Whether it was eating the school lunch or eating out for dinner, I would eat away from home occasionally. Some of my favorite convenience/snack foods are carrots, apples with peanut butter, chips, and granola bars. Currently, I only eat about 1-2 meals away from home. I only have lunch away from home once a week and dinner 1-2 times a week. At a social gathering, my friends and I would most likely choose to eat pizza. It is a convenient food and everyone likes it. Growing up, my family ate of lot meals that were quick and easy to make. This included a lot of frozen food and vegetables/sides out of a can or box.
