Q3. O’Brien to Winston is someone he can relate to because Winston thinks that O’Brien
wants the same thing that he wants. O’Brien is someone that stands out to Winston
because he seems like someone who is going through the same thing Winston, himself, is
going through- doubt. Winston trusts O’Brien because he thinks that they both can send
messages to each other and trust each other. “But there was a fraction of a second when
their eyes metr, and for as long as it took to happen Winston knew-yes, jhe knew!- that
O’Brien seemed to be saying to him.” (p 17) This shows that even if Winston did not
personally know he, he felt a connection between the two. There was also the
brotherhood. Winston believed in trusted each other, even if they would backstab each
other one day.
Q7. Julia influences Winston by showing him different ways of life. One of the ways she
has influenced Winston was by thinking. He had written in his diary about Julia, and
makes him start to think. Not only is he having crimethought, he also starts to meet with

life. Julia has both a negative and positive impact on Winston., but she is mostly being a
negative influence on Winston. She shows him real items, meets in secret and even makes
him go against the rules. Even if freedom is something everyone wants in life, you are
never free. Instead of following Julia, and letting her influence him, Winston could have
stayed away from the “Ministry of Love” if he stayed away from her.
Q8. Winston's capitulation at the hands of O’Brien was cruel. “All he had eyes for was the
truncheon in the guard’s hand” (p 239)
He had gone through pain, physically and
mentally. The guards that was with O’brien had also physically damaged him. The way
O’Brien talks to Winston about Big Brother and how nothing in his life matters but Big
Brother in a repetitive way brainwashed Winston in a way. Winston is brought to “love
Big Brother” is by the pain that O’Brien makes him go through. O’Brien had repeatedly
