SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS A chronic progressive, inflammatory connective tissue disorder that can cause major body organs and systems to fail. One of it’s main characteristic is its spontaneous remissions and exacerbations in which the onset may be acute or insidious. SLE affects only the skin. PATHO: SKIN AND KIDNEY (CARDIOVASCULAR IN LATE STAGE) SLE is thought to be an autoimmune disease in which Antinuclear antibodies affect the DNA, RNA and other components within a cell. Immune complexes form in the serum and organ tissues, which cause inflammation complexes for min the serum and organ tissues, which cause inflammation, damage, and destruction. This process invades the organs directly or cause vasculitis (vessel inflammation). Usually involves the kidney which leads to death (attraction to the glomeruli of the kidneys). Your own immune system is attacking your own cells—renal is the most often affected. T and b cell hyperactivity. Overaggressive autoimmune reaction directed against constituents of cell nucleous single and double stranded DNA. Onset is most often between 20-40 years but has been seen in young children and older adults. (probably caused by a combo of genetic and environmental factors) Affects women 10x more often than men. (Usually colored women) A transient lupus like syndrome can occur in some patients taking procainamide (Pronestyl) and hydralazine. Can trigger the condition Biological response modifiers like infliximab, which is used to treat RA

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
