HD STUDY GUIDE-PRELIM 2 Gender Identity Steinberg, pp. 292-294: Androgyny is when individuals have both highly masculine and highly feminine traits (ambitious and sensitive). The gender intensification hypothesis states that many of the sex differences between adolescent boys and girls result from an acceleration in their socialization to act in stereotypically masculine or feminine ways. For example, girls stay away from math and science and become more emotional while boys become less emotional. According to Gilligan, females are praised when they are younger for their feminine qualities (nurturing and caring) and then when they hit puberty, they are put under society’s values (being assertive and independent). This confuses the girls and causes them to lose their confidence and “voice.” Adolescent boys who have masculine traits are best accepted by their peers but are at high risk for problem behavior. Girls who are have androgynous traits are best accepted by their peers. Boys are told to relinquish there feminine traits while girls are encouraged to be feminine but can still have some masculine traits. Steinberg, pp. 322: Harter studied both boys and girls and found that girls don’t all lose their voice. Girls with feminine traits give into the stereotypes and become quiet and unassertive and consequently receive little support from others and therefore, develop a decrease in “voice.” Brown & Gilligan: They take a more literary and cognitive approach to interviewing because they follow the girls and focus on their voice (how they start and stop and react). Then, they developed and formulated methods for interpreting the girl’s movements and listening to the complexities of voice in relationship. They listen for 1) who is speaking? 2) in what body? 3) telling what story a bout relationship-from whose perspective or from what vantage point? 4) in what societal and cultural frameworks? The first time through the interview, they listen to the story the person tells. The second time, they listen for “self”- for the voice of the “I” speaking in this relationship. The third and forth times, they attend to the ways people talk about relationships-how they experience themselves in the relational landscape of human life. Neeti herself is evidence of this. Girls are real as children. Then, they become pressured by the ideals of society to conform and they lose their “voice” in trying to be what they think they’re supposed to be. Steinberg, pp. 379-384: 8% of boys and 6% of girls reported having had strong same-sex attractions or engaged in same-sex activity during adolescence. 3%-4% of adolescents identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual. The majority of gay, lesbian, and bisexual adults report that they engaged in heterosexual activity as adolescents. Most individuals who do not develop an exclusive preference for heterosexual relationships, report that they are bisexual.
