Jean Kilbourne’s Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising’s Image of Women, paints a picture that she started researching over 40 years ago. She released her first movie, Killing Us Softly, in 1979 and has been updating it ever since. She startsby saying that advertisements are all around us and can’t be avoided, no matter how wetell ourselves that we aren’t paying attention to them. One quote that stuck out in my mind was the idea of the “toxic cultural environment,” which is “an environment that surrounds us with unhealthy images and constantly sacrifices our health and our sense of well-being for the sake of profit.” She states that from a very young age, women are made to believe that they must strive towards the goal of absolute flawlessness in termsof appearance.
