Name: Makayla Watts Date: 6/6/19 School: Ramsay High School Facilitator: Miller 1.06 Beowulf vs. Grendel’s Mother Directions: Answer the questions below about the conflict between Beowulf and Grendel’s Mother. Use specific details from the passages to help support your answers. 1. Why weren't the warriors as frightened by Grendel's mother as by Grendel? In the "Grendel's Mother" section, it reads, " No female, no matter how fierce, could have come with a man's strength, fought with the power and courage men fight with,..”, which supports that, with Grendel's mother being a woman, they weren’t frightened because they didn't think or expect her to be as powerful or courageous as a man. 2. What does this lesser fear of her reveal about the Anglo-Saxons? It shows that they believed men to have greater power than women and to have complete dominance. Unlike today, women were probably seen as incapable of doing or sharing the same qualities of men, especially in battle. 3. According to Beowulf, what is "the noblest of goals"? In his words, "the noblest of goals" is "fame after death", which basically means he what he values most is being remembered and honored long after his lifetime.
