Megan BaileyPLOT SUMMARY - HamletPrevious ActionIt’s the medieval ages in Elsinore, Denmark, and Hamlet the king of Denmark has died and been buried for a few months now. Shortly after her husband’s death, Queen Gertrude married her former brother-in-law, Claudius, making him the new King of Denmark. Hamlet, the prince ofDenmark, has returned home from school in Germany to mourn his father’s death. Years before rise, King Hamlet won a duel with the King of Norway, claiming a piece of land at the expense ofthe life of the King of Norway.ACT IScene IAt rise, palace guards interact with a ghostly figure that they believe is the ghost of the deceased King Hamlet. (foreshadowing) Horatio, a guest of one of the night-watchmen, identifies the armor of the ghost as being the same as the armorthe king wore during the war with Norway. (foreshadowing) Horatio tells the guards about how the king took land from Norway by defeating Norway’s king in a duel. (Exposition) Horatio also tells them that Fortinbras, the prince of Norway,has amassed an army to take back his family’s land. To end the scene, Horatio suggests that the guards tell Hamlet about the ghost.Scene IIClaudius, King of Denmark, gives a speech explaining that he married his dead brother’s wife only a month after his death in order to give the kingdom a strong ruler in the face of impending war with Norway. At the end of his speech, Claudius sends courtiers to the King of Norway to ask him to dissuade Fortinbras, his nephew, from attacking Denmark. Laertes asks King Claudius for permission to return to France, where he had been before the death of King Hamlet, and receives it.Hamlet makes it known that he does not approve of Gertrude’s quick remarriage,especially since the groom was his uncle. Gertrude tells him that everyone dies, and to get over himself.Horatio and two of the guards from Scene I arrive and tell Hamlet about the ghost. (rising action) Hamlet tells them to keep it a secret, and to meet him that night on the battlement where they had spotted the ghost so he could meet it too.Scene IIILaertes is about to leave for France, and his sister Ophelia is saying goodbye. Laertes warns his sister to remain pure to maintain their family’s honor. Their father, Polonius, tells him to be careful and wishes him well. (equilibrium)
Laertes also tells Ophelia not to be lured in by Hamlet’s advances. (equilibrium)Scene IVHamlet meets Horatio and Marcellus on the battlement. The ghost appears and beckons Hamlet to follow it, and Hamlet, against the advice of his friends, goes. Marcellus remarks that something is very wrong. (foreshadowing)Scene VGhost tells Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius and that in order for his soul to rest, Hamlet has to avenge him by killing Claudius (but not to touch the queen). (inciting action) Hamlet swears himself to his dead father’s cause, and goes back to his friends.
