ORIGIN OF VARIATION Variation is central to the evolutionary process o Phenotype and genotype Phenotype is constellation of observable traits Genotype is the genetic endowment of a particular individual (either at a single locus or for entire genetic complement) Phenotype is a function of genotype AND environment – but evolutionary process depends on heritable variation o Somatic and germ cell lineages Heritability is solely the province of germ cell lineages (August Weismann) – you can only pass genes on if they are contained in eggs/sperm Sequestering of the germ line Ex) Mice – do or do not filter HEPA pollutants from air Pollution has larger effect on mutations in sperm from father than mother Mutation Rates o Mutation as an evolutionary force Not strong Rate of mutations are very low IMPORTANT BECAUSE this is the ultimate source of genetic variation o Terminology Gene – functional unit of heredity – a region of the genome that
