A Healthy Nurse Means a Happy Patient Page 2 INTRODUCTION The ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses was developed as a tool for the nurse to understand the ethical obligations and duties of every person who chooses to enter the nursing profession. It is also used to serve as a guide to help those understand the nurse’s commitment to society. There are a total of 9 provisions in the ANA Code of Ethics and they are divided into three groups. Provisions 1-3 discuss the fundamental values of the professional nurse, provisions 4-6 go into the duty and loyalty, and 7-9 the expanded duties beyond direct patient care. While all 9 of the provisions are equally important, there was one that resonated with me. As a nursing student I don’t feel that I have as much insight into the world of healthcare that a nurse who has worked for over 30 years has. This being said, I chose the provision that I feel I have witnessed and heard the most about. It is also a provision that I feel is one of the most important to consider when entering the nursing profession. The provision I have chosen to write about is number 5, which the American Nurses Association (2011) states as “the nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to preserve integrity and safety, to maintain competence, and to continue personal and professional growth”. I interpret this to say that the nurse owes him/herself the same respect and attention that they give to their profession and patients. Another big part of this provision that I find to be important is that the nurse must never stop wanting to learn and grow in their profession. The main focus of this paper is going to be on “nurse burnout” and how it can be avoided.

A Healthy Nurse Means a Happy Patient Page 3 A Healthy Nurse Means a Happy Patient Sacrifice. Empathy. Compassion. Professionalism. Hope. These are some of the words that a random group of strangers came up with when I asked them what they thought of when they heard the word “nurse”. Nursing is one of the top professions that comes to mind when I think about selflessness and dedication. The only problem with being so compassionate and giving is that more often than not, none of those wonderful attributes are applied to the nurse themselves. It seems that there is not enough time for the nurse to take care of him/herself and therefore they suffer immensely. “The nurse tends to put all of their focus on their patients and their patient’s families, therefore the nurse’s own friends and family are often left on the back burner and relationships and family ties are often strained” (Hawes 2009).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
