How to Shoot a Basketball Correctly Shooting a basketball may seem hard at first but it just takes some time, hard work and a willingness to learn. These steps and tips will guide you to become a much better shooter and overall player. Just follow all the steps one by one and take your time. Do not get frustrated, and everything will come together. Steps 1. Stand anywhere on the court, preferably in close, for your first shot with a basketball. 2. Have your body square to the hoop. 3. Bend your knees, and keep your feet shoulder-width apart. The arm that you shoot with should be under the ball and your other hand should be on the side of the ball. 4. Make sure the starting point of the basketball is at your neck (this is called the shooting pocket). 5. For best accuracy your eyes should be focused on the back of the rim 6. Jump straight up, or slightly forward for longer shots. 7. Release the ball, forcing it up and forward with dominant hand only. That other hand is just for aiming (that includes not moving the wrist of the aiming hand toward the basket at the time of release). 8. Follow through with dominant hand pointing towards the basket,
