Healthcare2In October 2008, President Obama affirmed that health care should be a right, not a privilege. On October 1, the healthcare exchanges in the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, opened for enrollment to Americans (Brady, 2013). At the heart of the issue is the question of whether Americans believe that healthcare is a right or a privilege. It is easy to see why the “healthcare is a right” debate has become so quarrelsome, people mean entirely different things when they use the word right and privilege. According to the online dictionary, privilege is defined as a special advantage, immunity or benefit not enjoyed by all and right has the definition of something that is due to a person or governmental body by law, tradition, or nature. So do Americans have a special advantage that is not offered to all which could be the definition of privilege, because all people in the world do not have insurance and/or healthcare. Do we have a claim or are we entitled to health insurance and healthcare, if so that would be our right, itwould be due to us, but it’s not, healthcare is something we have to pay for not due to us. Now, Ido think that healthcare and being able to have insurance is a privilege and benefit that is offered to employees from their employer. But yet still, all are not offered this especially at an affordablecost (Vickery KD, 2013).I think when people say healthcare is a right, or ought to be a right, they don’t always have the same thing in mind. I think most would agree that you shouldn’t be denied healthcare on account of race, religion, ethnic origin, or sexual orientation. Health care is a service that we all need just like food and shelter. So, health care is not just another commodity,health care is a
