ENG 106: Composition IILearning Unit 10: HandoutPage 1 of 7Revision StrategiesReminders for Basic RevisionRevision processes are different for each writer; however, as you learned in LU6, some basic principlesapply to most writing situations. In this lecture, you’ll learn additional strategies to build on those you’vealready been developing this term. Beforewe move on to new strategies, though, let’s briefly reviewthose you learned earlier in the term:1.Avoid second person (you, your, you’re) and direct addresses to the audience. Making demandsof the audience, commanding the audience to do or think something, and asking questionsdirectly of the audience all constitute inappropriate uses of second person which should beavoided in this type of formal academic writing.2.Be careful with commas.a.Be sure to use a comma before coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)when the conjunction connects two independent clauses (complete sentences). (See Hackerand Sommers 32a & 32f)b.Be sure use to use a comma after introductory word groups and transitions which lead intocomplete sentences.(See Hacker and Sommers 32b & 48)c.Avoid comma splices. That is, do not connect two complete sentences with only a comma.You can avoid comma splices by using a period ( . ), a semicolon ( ; ), or a comma plus acoordinating conjunction ( ,and ) instead.d.Offset non-essential information from a sentence by surrounding it with commas. (SeeHacker and Sommers 32e & 32f)3.Avoid redundancy. Do not repeat the same ideas multiple times in your paper, and do notrepeat the same idea twice within the same sentence or paragraph. You will also want to varyword choice and sentence structure to make your ideas more interesting. (See Hacker andSommers 15)4.Transition between ideas to create coherence and unity. At the beginning of new paragraphsand new main points, incorporate transitional material that helps readers understand therelationship between the content they have just finished reading and the new point they areabout to read. (See Hacker and Sommers 4d)More Strategies for RevisionAlthough the previously addressed revision methods contribute significantly to developing a strongpaper demonstrating academic tone, you can, of course, work on other strategies to hone your writingskills. Two of the best ways to develop mature academic tone include improving language concision andvarying punctuation use. We’ll look at both in this lesson.

Some people have even learned enough grammar and punctuation rules to make theirwriting clean of mistakes. However, the absence of mistakes isn’t always the same thing as a mature,engaging, academic writing style. The language use guidelines included here should help you write in amore mature, engaging manner.
