Structural Isolation and Imagery in Boris Pasternak’s “O Had I Known…” In Boris Pasternak’s four stanza modernist poem “O Had I Known…,” meaning is revealed through structural isolation, imagery, allusions, and a loose rhyme scheme. Using these two literary devices, Pasternak solemnly contemplates on his career as a poet. Pasternak concludes that his poems have both given him life and imbued him with curses. This paper will also establish that Pasternak himself is the speaker of the poem because of the highly personal tone and relevance of “O Had I Known…[.]” Such an explanation is needed because the paper relies on this premise. In “O Had I Known. ..” the poem’s first person perspective is Pasternak himself. The poem includes specific reference to “lines” (“O Had I Known…” 3 and 14), the equivalent of a sentence for the poet. In addition, the poem implies the speaker is reflecting on a career. For example, the first two stanzas are focused largely on Pasternak’s early career, while the last two stanzas focus on Pasternak’s later career. Pasternak’s life was filled with exile and censorship by the Soviet Union due to his poetry (Kadir et al. 306-307). This poem captures the ramifications he incurred because of his poetry, as his lines would “roll up in [his] throat and kill” him metaphorically, because of all the troubles his poetry gave him. As Pasternak thought of this poem, he undoubtedly traced through his career. He then captured his solemn contemplation by providing a poetic history of his career.
