Chapter 29 – Overview of Land Plant Diversity The theme of this chapter is to introduce the student to several basic fundamental aspects plant adaptations to life on land and the resulting diversity of land plants. The Concept Outline (P.579) and the Concept Review Outline (P. 597) are excellent. This chapter is very important in having a basic understanding of plant biology – REGARDLESS of what your interest may be in the life sciences. A separate file was sent summarizing major aspects of plant adaptations to terrestrial environments. It is important to be familiar with the general life cycle of plants (Fig. 29.3). Plants have “ haplodiplontic ” life cycles, meaning that both haploid and diploid forms are multicellular. There is an Alternation of Generations between the Gametophyte stage (N) and the Sporophyte stage (2N). The Gametophyte stage produces gametes and the Sporophyte stage produces spores. The diploid sporophytes produce haploid spores by meiosis . These spores develop into the Gametophyte stage by
