Brady continues to experience grief from the loss of his mother. Brady has
been misbehaving at school and at home. Brady’s father does not
understand that Brady’s behaviors are due to the loss. Brady’s father is
fearful of his father due to verbal and physical abuse that has been
Brady falls into Erikson’s stage of identity vs role confusion. This stage
occurs between age 12 through 18. Teens search for their sense of self or
identity and attempt to become more independent. I do not think Brady is
mastering this stage due to him continuing to struggle with the death of his
mother and struggling to have a healthy relationship with his father. When
working with Brady and his father I would start with assessing Brady on a
child and adolescent functional assessment scale (CAFAS). This tool is to help
determine a youths’ overall level of functioning such as school/work, home,
community, behavior towards others, moods/emotions, self-harmful
behavior, substance use, and thinking (Holosko, Dulmus & Sowers, 2013).
