Chapter 33: Coelomate Invertebrates Like Chapter 32, the theme of this chapter expands the discussion – in this case, from the second part of Chapter 31. An overview of the important aspects of Chapter 33 are summarized in the Chapter Concept Outline on P. 651 and Concept Review on P. 681. A list of the more significant details follows. Do Not Memorize Table 33.2 – take a course in Entomology instead. 1. Mollusks were among the first coelomates. 2. Annelids were the first segmented animals. 3. Lophophorates appear to be a transitional group. They share a common feeding structure. 4. Arthropods are the most diverse of all animal groups. 5. Echinoderms are deuterostomes and your closest relative among the animal phyla. The larvae are bilaterally symmetrical, but the adults are radially symmetrical. Major Questions: 1. Mollusks evolved in marine environments. Some species even managed to colonize freshwater. What was a major evolutionary advance that allowed some species to colonize land? (Hint: SEX!!! – but be specific). The same situation applies to colonization of land by vertebrates in Chapter 34. 2. Many marine mollusks have an immature stage called a “Trochophore” larva. This is very similar to the larval stage of what other phylum? 3. Are all Mollusks bivalves? What is regarded to be the most intelligent invertebrate? 4. What one word would characterize the body plan of Annelids? 5. The segments in the Annelids have individual, as well as shared metabolic activities.
