Hormonal control of the Menstrual Cycle: The menstrual cycle can be very complicated because it involves both positive and negative feedback systems. I have attempted to provide an outline here and will supplement this with a handout which we will discuss in class. We will begin the outline of the menstrual cycle with the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. This release occurs continuously UNLESS suppressed by another hormone, progesterone. Use this outline to follow the events in Figure 50.21. 1. GnRH stimulates the anterior pituitary to release FSH and LH. 2. These hormones circulate in the blood and initiate follicle development within the ovaries. The Granulosa cells of the developing follicles secrete estrogen. Now, we have FSH, LH, and estrogen circulating, which over the next two weeks, or so, causes the follicles to grow. One follicle finishes growth. 3. As the maturing follicle enlarges, it secretes greater amounts of estrogen.
