Lab ReportName: Sandra ChairesDate: 3/8/17Title of Experiment: Evaluating commercial AntacidsPurpose:The purpose of this experiment is to determine the number of moles of hydrochloric acid neutralized by a commercial antacid tablet. Calculate the mass effectiveness and cost effectiveness of the tablet. Compare the mass effectivenessand cost effectiveness of different brands of antacids.Materials:BuretBuret stand and clamp250-mL Erlenmeyer flask (2)FunnelWaste beaker, 250-mL0.50 M HCl, standardized0.1 M NaOH, made in a previous experiment1 antacid tabletBromophenol Blue IndicatorBackground:Most titrations involve a base in the buret titrated against an unknown concentration of acid in the flask, neutralization reaction. In this lab the unknown is a base, an antacid tablet, and the solution in the buret is also a base, NaOH, therefore we will perform a back-titration. A back-titration is when one of the solutions is already neutralized with an excess of the acid. For this experiment we will addstandardized HCl to the antacid tablet to neutralize the tablet with an excess of the HCl. Then you will titrate with the standardized NaOH to determine the number of excess moles of HCl. Subtracting the excess moles of HCl from the total moles of HCl added will give you the number of moles of base in the antacid tabletProcedure:According to the Chemistry 1A Lab Manual, Evaluating Commercial Antacids,Prepare Antacid Tablet Sample
