Pale Fire BACKGROUND Monday, November 07, 2005 1:16 PM Nabokov - born in 1899, in Russia from a pretty good, elitish family Born a genius, too smart for his own good, spoke Russian, French, English by age 7 Naturalist by training, biologist Russian Revolution happened in 1919-ish He was able to go to England and study in Cambridge Russia falls to the Communists known as "Red Russians" People who supported the "old gov't", the czar were "White Russians" Nabokov was a White Russian and his life was destroyed by Communism Father assassinated by an extremist He wrote maybe 4 novels in Russian before moving to England War's getting band, France falls, Nabokov moves to America in the 40's He's considered an American author because he wrote his later books in English Got a job at Cornell teaching literature in the English department
