Whatever I wear, I am myself / Why those boys wearing skirt on May 11?
A-line skirt, high-waisted skirt, mini skirt and one-piece, girls can choose various
clothes to wear during the sweltering summer days. But what boys can wear? Maybe
only pants in different length.
Once a man walking on the street with a skirt, “cross-dresser”, “gay” and “freak” will
label on him. But does skirt only set for women? The student organizers of “MEN IN
SKIRT” activities in Taiwan gave us a hint.
On May 11 2019, less than a week before same-sex marriage votes
on three different
proposals for and against same-sex marriage, student organizers from the National
Taiwan University and Banqiao Senior High School supported their male students to
wear skirt. “We don’t push anyone to wear skirt to the public if he doesn’t want,”
Billionn Lee, one of the organizers in Banqiao Senior High School, said. “What we
want to advocate is that you have the right to dress yourself as you wish, also in a
boarder sense, you can be whatever you want to be in Taiwan.”
From May 6 to May 11, the student union of Banqiao Senior High School held the
“Men in skirt week” during the school’s 73
rd
anniversary to fight for the gender
stereotypes and respect dress freedom.

“When we planned the activity, we targeted our students in school. But when we
posted the activity content on social media, we received many response from the
public,”Billionn said. So they changed their place from the school gate to the Civil
Square near the Banqiao Station. Besides, the student committees also provided more
than thirty skirts in different sizes for the participants to wear.
