Perspective Late 19 th Century through WWII: Joint British-Egyptian control. Sudan gains Independence from Anglo- Egyptian control in 1956. Arab-led government fails to uphold promise to create a system of federalism, so southern military leaders rebel. 17 years of civil war: 1955-72 Root cause: underdeveloped South fears domination by powerful Arab North.
