Metabolism – sum of all chemical reactions in the body Organelles – cells to tissue to organs to systems Homeostatic Mechanism – (Pulling a blanket over yourself is NOT and example!) Carbon Dioxide is NOT required for maintenance of life Irritability means that it senses a change in the surrounding environment and reacts to it Homeostasis is the ability to maintain equilibrium in the body systems Visceral Plura lies directly on the organ Organic Substances are large chains that contain carbon Inorganic Substances are small chains that do not contain carbon Electrolytes are ionized when 4 things body MUST have – oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen (C.H.O.N.) Hydrogen is = Denature a protein occurs when a bond is broken Characteristics of a protein - An Enzyme is a protein that speeds up chemical reaction without being changed or completed Nucleic acid stores genetic information Endoplasmic Reticulum has 2 parts 1) Rough – studded by ribosome synthesis non-soluble proteins 2) Smooth – helps to detoxify
