Kate Beagle Dr. Carman ENGL 131 25 September 2018 Oedipus the King: Fate or Freud? Fate plays a pinnacle role in many of history’s greatest epics and tragedies. Oedipus the King is no exception. In fact, it is perhaps the greatest display of fate “royally” (pun definitely intended) screwing over the lead protagonist. Throughout his epic journey, Oedipus takes various twists and turns away from the cruel fate that was prophesized for him – even his own father is willing to sacrifice him to avoid this vicious luck – yet at the crescendo of his story, Oedipus is faced with the cruel reality that despite his greatest intentions, he has become the incestuous monster and murderer he was always destined to be. Which begs an interesting question: is fate in epic tragedy a cruel mistress, or a guiding hand? Is it meant to inevitably defeat history’s greatest heroes, or steer them away from their vices and faults? Within the story of Oedipus the King , it becomes painfully clear that whether fate is cruel or kind, it is as certain as it is unavoidable. Circumventing fate is a fool’s errand, and attempting to do so will only result in the destruction of its’ unfortunate victim. Fate within the tale of Oedipus the King first presents itself in the form of a priest of Zeus praising the goodwill that their city was sent when Oedipus arrived at the gates and defeated a cruel sphinx with his cunning and intelligence. This priest sings Oedipus’ glory, claiming that he had a “god’s help” when he arrived in their territory, a foreboding claim that later proves both stunningly true and painfully false (p. 668). This priest begs the aid of King Oedipus in ending a plague that has ravaged the
