COMMUNICATION IN THE MOVIES 2 Communication in the Movies – Part Three Communication is affected by many factors, both physical and psychological. A person’s emotional state, physical location, culture and past experiences all play a role in how information within interpersonal exchanges is heard, processed and interpreted. To further consider how communication is portrayed in films, I have selected two scenes from the film Dream for an Insomniac . My scene selections demonstrate the roles culture and emotion have on communication. I will apply the concepts that we have learned throughout this course to examine the effects of culture and emotion on interpersonal communication. The Effects Culture Has on Communication According to Communication in the Real World: An Introduction to Communication Studies, culture is defined as “The ongoing negotiation of learned, and patterned beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors” (Chapter 8.1, 2013). The scene I chose to analyze for its cultural content is, “I’ve known for a long time.” In this scene, Rob is struggling to “come out” to his father. The characters present in this scene are Rob and Leo. The scene takes place in the coffee shop that Leo owns. There are a number of cultural contexts present in this scene including age, nationality, ethnicity, and sexual orientation (Communication in the Real World, 2013). Up until this point in the film, Rob has hidden his sexuality from his father. Rob fears that his father, who often talks about Rob needing to “find a good woman,” will be ashamed of him because he is gay.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
