WK4 Discussion COMM1004.docx - My grandmother used to say...

This preview shows page 1 out of 1 page.

My grandmother used to say to me, “It’s no coincidence that the words LISTEN and SILENT have the same letters”. I have learned in my life that there are certain friends that live by this credo and certain friends that don’t. I have a friend whose grandmother certainly never taught her this life lesson. She and I have been friends for many years and I love her dearly but conversations with her are sometimes filled of poor listening. The last time she and I were together, we were having lunch and talking about our kids. Looking back on our conversation, she was pseudo-listening, stage hogging, and filling in the gaps (Executive Advisory, n.d.). While I was telling a story about my son’s orchestra concert, she was nodding and smiling. She appeared to be interested (pseudo-listening) but was very quick to shift the focus of the conversation to her daughter. I could barely finish a sentence before she was interjecting a lengthy story about her daughter (stage hogging).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
