Servicemen's Readjustment Act (1944): This was a law passed in which it provided an education for returning World War II veterans. This act also provided a one year of unemployment compensation. This act also included loans for returning veterans in order for them to buy homes and possibly create a business. 2. Baby Boom: Markedly high birth rate in the years following World War II. This lead to the biggest demographic “bubble” in U.S history. By the end of the decade, around 32 million babies had been born. 3. Dr. Benjamin Spock: Spock was a pediatrician along with the author of “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care.” This book he creates helped parents on modern child-rearing, and it had also replaced traditional ways of passing information like this. He was considered to be the creator of the bible of the baby boomer generation. 4. Suburbia: Policies that the Federal government in the post-World War II era, made suburbs grow. These were communities created from the mass migration of middle-class whites from urban centers. 5. Levittown: First low-cut, mass-produced development of suburban tract housing built by William Levitt on Long Island, New York in 1947. Particularly occupied by white middle-class people who fled cities to find homes to buy for their growing families. 6. Sunbelt: Label for an arc that stretched from the Carolinas to California. In the time of the post-war era, most of the growth of urban population took place in this area. 7. 22 nd Amendment: This amendment stated that Presidents must be limited to a maximum of two elected terms, and only one if they succeeded an elected President and served in office for over two years of that elected President’s term. This amendment broke out because of Roosevelt’s four elected terms. 8. Cold War: State of hostility among the United States and the Soviet Union. This war took place a little bit after WWII with the extension of the Soviet Union influence on North Korea and Europe. In the end, communism in Eastern Europe collapsed and so did the Soviet Union. 9. Iron Curtain: Term created by Winston Churchill to describe the Cold War division between western Europe and the Soviet Union’s Eastern European satellites. 10. Containment policy: Refers to the foreign policy strategy of the U.S in the beginning stages of the Cold War. It was an attempt to stop the “domino effect” of nations from moving towards the Soviet Union. 11. Truman Doctrine: Truman wanted to prevent communism from spreading and wished for it to be contained. The first application of this doctrine was four hundred million given to help Greece and Turkey to stop communism. 12. Marshall Plan: A plan created by George Marshall to help nations of Europe rebuild their economies and strengthen their government. It was around seventeen billion dollars to distribute within European countries throughout a four year period.
