2 Small Poems, Big Ideas 8 October 2007 Letting the World Pass By In William Wordsworth’s poem “The world is Too Much with Us”, Wordsworth is describing a problem that faces the world today on a grand scale. This problem being material possession being foremost in the majority of people’s minds and letting this problem take away from just enjoying the world in all of its natural beauty; there is also a description by Wordsworth about faith and believing in something no matter what that might be. In the United States today capitalism is running people’s lives and being a consumer is a full time job. Wordsworth tells us to stop focusing on material possessions and to admire the beauty that is around us. The two main ideas of materialism/ignoring nature and the idea of belief in something are cleverly divided by the rhyme scheme that Wordsworth put into place. The end rhyme for the first part of this sonnet is ABBAABBA. This simply means that lines given an “A” rhyme and lines given a “B” rhyme with each other. The second being the sestet of the sonnet and the rhyme scheme being CDCDCD. This first part of the sonnet is called the octave. In this octave Wordsworth writes, “Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers”, this line of poetry criticizes the populace of not using their natural talents to
