9/15/2017 Xenophanes: Only One God? One of the first philosophers ever known went by the name of Thales of Miletus (625-547 BC). He thought in a way that nobody had at the time. Unlike most of the citizens in Greece, he started to question everything that he thought was a fact. He started to use reasoning behind his thinking which brought up many questions about life as anybody knew it. Most people did not believe him. However, some people started to pick up on his thinking which created even more theories about the world we all exist in. These specific thinkers are called “pre-socratic” which were all the influential philosophers that came before Socrates. They all used logos to convey their beliefs which was something that was not used in those times. So, why is it that they are still being discussed today? Which of these pre-socratic thinkers was most influential? One of the most important pre-socratic thinkers in my opinion is Xenophanes. His contribution to philosophy is one that can not be matched. He had many of ideas to different topics regarding the world such as the disapproval of the Greek gods. It is stated in The Great Conversation that, “He thinks it is shameful
