Inside Out Coaching AnalysisZach StevensonConcordia University IrvineMCAA 510September 30th, 2018Professor Reggie Ellis
Inside Out Coachingdoes a great job of emphasizing the importance of transformational coaching. Written by Joe Ehrmann, the book does an outstanding job of giving examples of bothtransactional and transformational coaches, along with specific situations and examples that shaped his coaching philosophy. The main thesis of effective inside out coaching is relating whyyou coach back to your own coaching philosophy. These coaching examples and the thesis has helped me relate inside out coaching to my own coaching philosophy. The main these of Inside Out Coachingis to create a coaching philosophy of a transformational coach who not only teaches the skills and fundamentals of their sport, but also teaches high character, morals, and values of life to help shape young men and women into high character members of society. Ehrmann describes the inside out journey that coaches must go through in order to become transformational leaders. This process that he describes begins with why you coach. Several times throughout the text he states exactly why he coaches. For example, “I coach the way I do to help players meet tehri needs for male mentoring, modeling, and acceptance.” (Ehrmann, 2011, pg. 116). This shows that Joe Ehrmann was able to truly become a transformational coach because of his true purpose for coaching. It also shows that he puts athletes first, winning second and puts the focus on helping young men and women mature and show them that they can rely on their coach, at times in situations where their parents aren’t there for them. Coaches can be just as influential as parents, if not more so.
