What kinds of commentsare made about Europe at the beginning of the story?During the time this novella was written in 1912 there was a lot of political tension in Europe. Europe’s main powers were divided in two alliances which was The Triple Alliance and The Triple Entente. They were many disputes among them to name a few such as France wanting the return of the provinces of Alsace from Germany and Britain having economic rivalry with Germany as well. Therefore, creating a cloud of tension between the two alliances.At the beginning of the novella the setting takes place in Munich, “on a spring afternoon of the year 19.., Which had shown the continent such a menacing grimace for a few months”. Meaning the political tension could be felt throughout Europe. 2. What kind of person is Aschenbach? What is his personal history?Gustav von Aschenbach is a known and admired German writer throughout the world he comes from a noble family hence the “von”. He is married with a daughter and is known to be quite disciplined and intellectual. 3. How is Aschenbach affected by the man in the cemetery? Who is this man? What does he represent?
