“THE HERO AS A LOVER” 2 “The Hero as a Lover”: How Jeanette’s Story in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit Represents a Return to the Traditional Mythology of the Human Consciousness Joseph Campbell once explained the traditional mythos of which literature was conceived. In recent years, stories and human thinking has moved away from such concepts as the Monomyth, Hero’s Journey, and the Cosmogonic Cycle. The novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is a return to what philosopher Joseph Campbell described as the traditional Mythos as the plot is a representation of the Hero’s Journey, the main character represents a return to a strong goddess figure, and the main character was conceived from a ‘Virgin Birth.’ The plot of Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, follows the traditional story arc known as the Hero’s Journey. Joseph Campbell explained that the Hero’s Journey starts out in the known world. Within the known, the hero gets their “call to adventure. Now, one might reason that Jeanette did not get called to any adventure. What happened to her was coincidental. Campbell explained, “This is… one of the ways in which the adventure can begin. A blunder… reveals an unsuspected world, and the individual is drawn into a relationship with forces that are not rightly understood”[ CITATION Cam49 \l 1033 ].
