Study of Mental Illness 2 Mental illness and imprisonment are just a couple of words that are frequently heard and used both together and apart in an average persons vocabulary, but is really there a relationship between them? According to past research, there is a high rate of delinquency among adolescents who are faced with learning disabilities (Atkins, D. L., Pumariega, A. J., Rogers, K., Montgomery, L., Nybro, C., Jeffers, G. (1999)), even though this is more of a specific detail of information about a subgroup of the population (adolescents) and with only a minor mental illness (leaning disability), many other sources provided similar information which applied to larger categories. Much of the past research based on inmates and their mental status concluded that there is seems to be definite association between the presence of mental disabilities in the prison system (REF). However, nowadays mental illness seems to be more of a copout to either get out of imprisonment, reduce charges, or lessen the sentencing, and quite possibly many of these diagnosis’s are false, and just another way for lawyers benefit by helping their clients. Mental illness is anything that sets a person apart from others as a whole based on a mental defect which affects the practical skills that a required for real world mainstream
