Why Topic was Chosen The area of focus selected was the role of the nurse practitioner which plays a large role in patient care at the clinical level. As a future nurse practitioner, I have great interest in ways of improving my own knowledge of practice and providing care that is the most up-to-date evidenced-based care. Part of the care that must be a cornerstone for the nurse practitioner is the focus on patient safety, which makes the safety issue of patient falls an obvious choice for selection. With patient falls continuing to be a predominant concern in the medical field, prevention of patient falls is obviously a vital concern for the future nurse practitioner in me. This topic was also near and dear to my heart as my grandmother passed away suddenly less than a year ago due to a fall that resulted in a hemorrhagic stroke and an abrupt coma that forced my family to say goodbye to an otherwise healthy individual. My grandmother was on several medications including blood thinners and had issues with balance, urinary frequency, and insomnia, all of which were factors in the untimely death that could have been avoided with better preventative measures. Importance of Topic “Falls are a major cause of injury and death annually for millions of individuals 65 and older” (Kruschke, 2017, p. 15). This statistic alone makes the topic of fall prevention a prevalent source of interest for improving patient safety. Furthermore, “cost of falls continues to rise with expenditures currently exceeding $31 billion in 2015 for nonfatal falls” (Kruschke, 2017, p. 15), and has even been deemed by Medicare as a “never event” (Kruschke, 2017, p. 15). The detrimental risk that falls pose to one’s health mixed with the rising medical costs makes fall prevention a priority to not only improve morbidity and mortality but also to be a good steward to the hospital’s we serve by reducing cost and loss.
